Winter and emergency readiness

Cold nights are coming. Can you reach those you aim to serve?

Send opt-in alerts to check-in with people other channels miss. Used for cold, heat, storms, closures, and collecting any real-time need.

Before. During. After.

Before

Build the opt-in list with a simple tap or scan.

During

Check-ins should be easy and fun.

After

Follow-up with valuable support and report what changed.

What DC Human Services did

DC Human Services adopted the alert approach we brought. Alerts carried shelter and ride information in extreme weather, including heat. DC Human Services now uses its own solution, modeled on the H1S approach.

Public health outreach through a trusted church

A church partner worked with H1S to promote public health resources in its community. The goal was simple: help people find useful health information and available support through a familiar community connection.

Keep checking what people need

After visiting North Carolina following Hurricane Helene, Tim and Wayne Underwood described aid groups overflowing with water, food, and clothing, and turning away most donations while unmet needs remained.

They identified ongoing needs assessment and coordination of supplies and repairs as critical parts of the response. Read the October 16, 2024 field update.

Readiness checklist

  1. Build the opt-in list with a simple tap or scan.
  2. Before the weather turns, agree who sends the alert and which official channel carries the live update.
  3. During cold, heat, a storm, or a closure, send shelter, ride, or service information to people who opted in.
  4. Check in privately. Hear what did not work.
  5. Follow-up with valuable support and report what changed.
  6. Point residents to the agency’s own channels for a live alert. This site is not a live alert feed.

Connect. Listen. Follow up.

  1. Connect. Share useful information with people who choose to hear from you.
  2. Listen. Give people a private way to share their needs and experiences.
  3. Follow up. Use what you learn to follow up and measure what matters.
